Expected & Encountered Medical Presentations in Remote Conservation Diving Expeditions: the Coral Cay Experience
Dr Karen Elizabeth Richardson M.B., B S., CCC’s Medical Logistic’s Advisor, undertook research with CCC to define expected and encountered medical presentations within the setting of a remote conservation diving expedition. The results of her research will shortly be published in the SPUMS journal in September.
Dr Richardson’s research concludes that the marine environment appears to play a large role in determining medical encounters on remote expeditions, particularly in relation to infective ear and skin complaints. The incidence rates of diving related conditions were lower than those reported on other studies. Medical encounters were consistent with those predicted by the findings of terrestrial expeditions. The relative risk of joining a remote tropical diving expedition is low and comparable to leisure activities in which young people commonly participate. The importance of risk minimisation and good planning are highlighted by these results.
