Negros Wildlife Month: A Great Success!
“Negros Wildlife Month was an overwhelming success”, said Dr. DJ Darwin Bandoy, curator of the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation’s Biodiversity Conservation Center (NFEFI-BCC) in Bacolod which organized the month-long program. “We’ll definitely stage it again in 2008”.
Speaking on Friday evening at the final events at Robinsons Bacolod to mark this celebration of local wildlife, Dr. Bandoy and Clint Alvior, NFEFI’s Conservation Education Officer, expressed their appreciation of everyone involved, especially the many students who took part and also to Robinsons for their strong support.
“The joint efforts of students and participating organizations was very effective in increasing awareness of the need to protect and conserve wildlife,” said Alvior.
Main feature of the final day was the first Musikalikasan Song Writing Contest. Students were invited to write and sing a song focusing on the environment. Winner was Ziebert Rigg C. Festano from La Consolacion College-Bacolod with his song Kalikasan Ating Alagaan. His song expressed the need to appreciate nature. Second place went to Lourgielyn Chua Agbon from the University of St. La Salle with her song Pangakong Iiingatan. Chris Emmanuel Alejado of LCC-Bacolod with his number Likas na Awit was placed third. Chief judge was NFEFI’s Toti Ledesma assisted by NFEFI Admin and Finance Officer Arlene Ebalde and trustee Robert Harland.
Special awards for the Animals of Negros Parade were given to Handumanan High School for the best gimmick with their imitation of the sound of a maral (Visayan leopard cat) as a cheer; to LCC High School for the best costumes and LCC Elementary School for the most number of participants with some 350 students taking part. All students in the parade wore masks and costumes depicting the endemic wildlife of Negros.
Negros Occidental High School student Alyssa Camille Salvio was the winner of the Wildlife Essay Writing contest with a paper on the role everyone can play to help promote conservation. Second place went to LCC-Bacolod’s Alyssa Diazs and third was USLS-IS student John Vincent Angeles.
