Dive In To Earth Day 2006 activities underway
San Francisco, CA – People across the planet are gearing up for the seventh annual Dive In To Earth Day event that will take place during the week of Earth Day, April 22, 2006. Volunteers from over seventy countries and territories will take action to protect their local aquatic environment by organizing fun activities that make a difference: beach and underwater clean-ups, educational workshops, fish and reef surveys, mooring buoy installations, among many others. Past Dive In organizers have acclaimed Dive In To Earth Day as a unique opportunity to make conservation fun and accessible while having a real impact – it is indeed a great and easy occasion to take action and help raise awareness on urgent marine conservation issues.
The Coral Reef Alliance (CORAL) coordinates Dive In To Earth Day each year to ensure that the 70 percent of the planet covered by water is at the forefront of annual Earth Day celebrations. Engaging communities in the active protection of the underwater world is becoming increasingly urgent as many of the world’s aquatic environments, notably coral reefs, are rapidly degrading: 20 percent of the world’s coral reefs have been destroyed and 24 percent are under imminent risk of collapse through human pressures.
Dive In To Earth Day has become a great success over the past six years, generating over 24 percent of all registered international Earth Day activities. Close to 300,000 participants from 103 countries and territories around the world have taken part in 1,500 Dive In activities. To date, Dive In participants have removed 140 Tons of trash from coastal areas, educated and inspired children to care for water resources, supported coral reef areas, and much, much more.
