MANAGEMENT PRACTICE FOR WORK ADJACENT TO REEFS
Added to website: 25 February 2008
The Southeast Florida Coral Reef Initiative (SEFCRI) Maritime Industry and Coastal Construction Impacts (MICCI) Team is proud to announce the completion of the MICCI Local Action Strategy Project 6: Best Management Practices (BMPs) for construction, dredge and fill and other activities adjacent to coral reefs.
The goal of this project was to develop a document of the best management practices or methods, for constructing, managing, and monitoring coastal construction projects that impact, or could impact coral reefs. Examples of potentially damaging coastal construction projects are dredging, beach renourishment, blasting, or the installation of pipes and cables. The document is meant to serve as a guide for coastal construction engineers and firms, environmental managers, planners, regulators and resource users in the coastal construction industry. It is hoped that by creating a “Best Management Practices” guidelines document, impacts to coral reefs will be reduced or eliminated.
The final BMPs document and Workshop Proceedings are now available online at: http://www.dep.state.fl.us/coastal/programs/coral/reports/
