Volunteer experience by Ian Cormack

Once the science training was completed I was able to take part in the real ‘baseline’ surveys which I really enjoyed doing. It was great to explore different parts of the Philippine coastline and to see how rich the marine environment was. I also saw marine life that I had not seen before – whale sharks (swimming with them was an amazing experience), turtles, sea snakes, etc.
It was also very interesting to see and experience a completely different culture. The local people were very friendly and welcoming, and the children, while poor by western standards, were so happy, and grateful for all that we did for them. Working with the local communities, sharing in their festivals, and teaching them about their marine environment and how to conserve it was very worthwhile.
I went out as a trained diver but it was excellent to be able to undertake further qualifications while I was there. In total I completed about 130 dives and once I became one of the more experienced team members it was good to be able to help some of the newer volunteers. My thanks to the hardworking staff who made all this possible.
Finally, a word of advice to anyone going on a CCC expedition – the pre-departure meeting was really useful and I would strongly recommend it to everyone!
