CCC- Technical response to Asian Tsunami
Added to website: 21 January 2005
In response to the recent tsunami in the Indian Ocean region, both the human and technical resources that Coral Cay Conservation has in coral reef and tropical forest conservation are being deployed to Thailand. This action comes in response to a request made by the Thai Government through the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office for technical expertise to assess the impact of the tsunami and then advise the reconstruction program to ensure that it is conducted in a sustainable manner.
James Comley, CCCs Director of Marine Science will be travelling to Bangkok on Saturday 21st January to attend a series of planning meeting being conducted by the Thai Government and will subsequently then be involving CCCs science resources in a two phase program of work. The initial phase will use high-resolution satellite imagery to examine coarse level changes to the natural resources of the impacted area. This will then be complimented by a period of ground truthing in Thailand observing and quantifying the tsunamis impact in situ.
The work is being supported through the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office and will be confined to Thailand initially, though on the forthcoming trip, CCCs resources will also be offered to the Governments of other affected countries in the region.
Updates on the activities will be posted on the Coral Cay Conservation web site.
