Derek “Dez” Maule was Chairman of Coral Cay Conservation from April 1999 until April 2005.
Dez is a Chartered Physicist and a graduate of Manchester University where he met his wife, Cathy. His early career was in research and development where his work on silicon chip technology produced many technical papers and a patent on Integrated Circuits. In 1974, Dez became General Manager of a company that produced the world’s first self-scanned imaging chip that now forms the principle of all facsimile machines and digital imaging devices, for which his company gained the Queen’s Award for Industry for Technical Innovation.
Over the following 27 years, Dez was Managing Director of various UK manufacturing companies and US subsidiaries. His track record includes company growth in both revenue and profitability from the development of new products, technologies and management restructuring. It was the last of these skills that brought him into contact with CCC, when in 1999 Dez successfully brokered the management restructure of CCC. In recognition of this, Pete Raines invited Dez to become CCC’s Chairman, a role that Dez generously agreed to undertake pro bono despite at that time still employed full-time as Managing Director of his company and Vice-President and President-elect of GAMBICA; the trade association for the automation and instrumentation industries in the UK.
In late 2001, Dez left full-time employment and became a management consultant and interim manager for several companies. At this time, Pete asked Dez to become more hands-on involved with the company and Dez remained as Chairman until earlier this year.
Dez’s legacy with CCC is the enabling of financial savings and improvements in the efficiency of the company and its management structuring. Dez’s extensive negotiating experience also enabled him to represent CCC overseas in the USA, Jordan and Fiji.
