Underwater Photography Course
Added to website: 01 April 2005
Marine Bio-images are running an Underwater Photography Course on the 21st & 22nd of May 2005.
Marine Bio-images are professional marine biological surveyors, underwater photographers and videographers, whose work is regularly used by Government and conservation agencies and NGOs. The course is taught from the perspective of training people how to take photographs for scientific purposes and for aesthetic/artistic purposes. We run photography courses on an occasional basis, fitting them around our other work. Currently there are a few places left on the May 2005 course.
Course Details
The course will consist of a ‘dry’ classroom based day and a ‘wet’ shore dive day. For the second, shore diving day, we require students to have an Open Water diving certificate as the minimum diving qualification. The course assumes no prior photographic experience - we teach from first principles (as a good understanding of photographic theory is far more important for uw photography than for land photography, we find it better not to assume knowledge). The course is geared towards people with no previous photographic experience, land-only photographic experience and beginners in underwater photography who want to improve.
The course covers:
- camera types,
- basic differences between film and digital systems,
- how they are affected by light,
- how this differs between land and underwater
- relationship between correct exposure, aperture, shutter speed, film speed/digital ISO
- relationships between lens angle, aperture size, film/sensor size, depth of field and angle of view
- How this varies between land and underwater
- flash systems: guide numbers, Watt seconds, flash angle, auto & TTL flash - principles
- How to position flash, when to use and not to use - limitations of TTL - problems of backscatter & light drop-off
- Choosing a system: film or digital, compact, Nikonos and Sea & Sea systems, housed SLRs, housed digital SLRs
- How to prepare the camera and after-dive care
- emergency treatment - what to do if the camera floods
- Review of photographic slides showing common mistakes and how to prevent them
- Dive to practice what you’ve learned. (2nd day)
This is a very intensive course, by the end of which you should have the knowledge to take competent photographs in most underwater situations.
The classroom session are held in our offices Exeter, Devon, which is roughly 15minutes walk from Exeter St David’s train station.
The Saturday will start at 9am and finish around 5-30pm; the Sunday will start at 9.30am and finish around 4.30pm.
A course certificate will be issued on completion.
You can use your own camera system or you can hire use of a Nikonos camera system from us. We also hire out a limited amount of diving equipment for those who need it.
