JACK PETCHEY 2008: PHASE ONE
Added to website: 06 April 2008
In 2007 Coral Cay Conservation (CCC) received funding from the Jack Petchey Foundation to provide selected schools in London with an exciting opportunity to gain expedition training in the UK and from that, to join a scuba diving expedition this summer to help protect the coral reefs of Tobago in the Caribbean.
On Saturday 30th June 2007, CCC took 19 lucky individuals on a one-day ‘Expeditions Skills Development Course’. This was an exciting and challenging course, which included a ‘Try SCUBA Diving’ event. The course was be held at ‘Andark Water sports & Diving Centre’ in Southampton.
The course proved to be a great success and the highlight of the day for all those involved was definitely the ‘Try SCUBA Dive’ that they all got to do.
Of those pupils who attend the course, four were offered a 4-week placement on a CCC coral reef conservation expedition to Tobago in the summer, where they were taught to SCUBA dive and were provided with skills development training in coral reef ecology and underwater scientific research.
After such a successful and exciting venture, and with a solid foundation to build on CCC and Jack Petchey have decided to run a similar project on a larger, and more challenging scale in 2008. We have expanded the catchment area to include the boroughs of Essex, and increased the numbers of pupils that get the opportunity to join one of Coral Cay’s Marine Expeditions.
