National Conference on the Science and Management of Mountain Ecosystems, Philippines.
Added to website: 17 December 2002
In November 2002, Craig Turner (Coral Cay Conservation Terrestrial Science Coordinator) and staff from the Negros Forests and Ecological Foundation Inc (NFEFI), attended the Second National Conference on the Science and Management of Mountain Ecosystems (SAMME 2002) in Baguio City, Philippines.
The conference attracted a diverse range of organizations and individuals from various parts of the country and the world- government and non-government organisations, the academe, conservation groups, and mountaineering and outdoor clubs. The conference aimed to seek a common understanding of the significance and potentials of mountains in ecotourism, and the role of ecotourism in sustainable mountain development in order to preserve mountain cultures, communities and biodiversity.
Craig presented a paper using the Negros Rainforest Conservation Project as an example to illustrate how the ‘direct ecotourism’ model that CCC adopts on its expedition sites can contribute to the conservation and sustainable management of the mountains of the North Negros Forest Reserve.
