Socio-economic Consultant Needed
Added to website: 06 October 2005
Coral Cay Conservation is an international conservation organisation that helps protect threatened coral reefs and tropical forests by collecting scientific information and providing management recommendations to local conservation bodies and communities.
CCC is expanding its work into social aspects of conservation; and has recently won NOAA funding to implement a socio-economic monitoring programme in the Bay Islands, Honduras. This area is to be designated as a Marine Protected Area and therefore this initative will provide a comprehensive understanding of the social and economic parameters of local communities and how these are likley to be affected by the proposed plans. The study will also explore local people’s perceptions of conservation and their capacity for involvement in resource management schemes. The assessment will be conducted according to the Social Monitoring framework developed by NOAA for the Caribbean, and will aim to build local capacity for future community based monitoring programmes.
CCC are currently recruiting a socio-economic consultant to implement this programme during a 6 month posting to Santa Elena, Honduras beginning in November/December 2005. Remuneration will be based on an expense plus basic wage basis for the project duration.
Applicants should possess a good level of knowledge of community based conservation issues in a marine context, an academic background in the social sciences or coastal resource management, and some previous experience of working with fishing communities on environmental projects. Experience of writing research reports for funding agencies and publication will be an asset.
