Scuba Instructor: Fiji Reef Conservation Project

Today is the first day in my 3rd dive trainee week. There are nine dive trainees - one is ill and two do not have medical clearance to dive - so I have 6 students beginning the confined water component of their open water course and two dive master trainees completing their internship. There is an air of anticipation, a mix of excitement and nervous tension. Our confined water is carried out in front of our expedition base. It is windy and slightly choppy but all the trainees are up for the challenge; visibility can be 10m but today it is about 1 metre in the shallows. The trainees are excellent and we make quick progress; the trainees are extremely excited by all the fish they see - and this is only their first set of confined water dives. The afternoon is spent on knowledge development. The rest of the week will be spent on training these trainees to open water diver and advanced open water diver level. My favourite part will be putting on my newly acquired dress and awarding dive certifications on Saturday.
