Tobago Coastal Ecosystems Mapping Project Update
Added to website: 22 May 2006
Tobago’s coral reefs like many in the Caribbean are threatened ecosystems.
At present whilst survey work on one of the reef complexes has been
undertaken, very little is known about the entirety of the fringing reef
that lines the Island. What however is known is that this system has
immense importance for both the social and economic stability of the
Island.
With this in mind and following an earlier piece of work undertaken by
CCC; a local NGO, the Buccoo Reef Trust, the Tobago House of Assembly and
the United Nations Development Program- Global Environment Facility have
now asked CCC to return to Tobago to undertake a comprehensive two-year
program of surveys.
These surveys will begin in October 2006 and we are currently recruiting
volunteers to be part of this important mission.
It is likely that the base of operations for the survey program will be
mobile to allow us to maximise the geographic coverage of the surveys and
we are currently exploring opportunities for suitable sites and options
which may include camping.
Senior CCC field-management staff will be undertaking a mission to Tobago
within the next few months and will be identifying some suitable sites,
accommodation and operations options. Upon the completion of this mission,
additional information will be posted on our website.
