The Cambodia Coral Reef Conservation Programme

The CCC expedition site is based on the island of Koh Rong at a secluded dive centre, which offers all the facilities and equipment needed to provide volunteers with a fantastic expedition experience! The community on the island relies on crab fishing, small-scale agriculture and Dive Shop Cambodia/Coral Cay Conservation to support its 70 inhabitants. The coral reefs around the islands are full of life and the rainforests on our expedition island harbour an equally high diversity of fascinating creatures.

As well as diving daily, there will be the opportunity to trek across the island where you’ll be treated to some spectacular views of the neighbouring islands and clear waters. The treks take you to some of the most remote locations on the island and expect to be wow'ed by the 5km white sand beach!

You'll be sleeping in 8-14 person dormitories in the Beach House which is shared between CCC and divers from the Dive Shop Cambodia. Out on the pier there’s a shared kitchen, dining area, storeroom, bathrooms, compressor compartment and a kitting up area –it's quite something!

CCC Marine Expedition Guide      Cambodia Project Summary

Monday to Friday

Mondays to Fridays is your ‘working’ week out in Cambodia, the focus is on research with a wake-up call at 06.30hrs! After breakfast, volunteers prepare for the mornings survey dive (if not training). The scuba and science kit is then prepped, in the kit up room before it’s loaded onto the dive boat; ready to head out a survey the reefs around Koh Rong.

Whilst a team of local and international staff are on-hand to provide guidance and oversee expedition activities, volunteers are expected to take an active part in managing all aspects of expedition life, including the more mundane chores such as helping keeping the Beach House clean and tidy.

Daily Activities

The weekdays are busy from from start to finish between your morning surveys and lunch (12.00hrs) there are a series of briefings, training exercises and question time for anyone who is unsure about things. Lunch is followed by a short siesta if your lucky, then a couple more exercises before you get back in the water for the afternoon survey. When all the work has been done, volunteers can enjoy spending the late afternoon relaxing by the waters edge, strolling up the white beaches while enjoying the reds, oranges and yellows of the sunset, reading, revising or if your feeling active you can challenge the locals to a game of volleyball - be prepared to lose though!

Dinner is served at 18.00hrs and is followed by a de-briefing session where the days actives will be talked over and the Fish of the Day will be hotly contested. Once all the formalities are done, volunteers are free! The bar is open from 18.00 to 22.00hrs for the sale of drinks (the sale of alcohol to volunteers under 18 years of age is not permitted).

At 22.00hrs the expedition base is secured for the night and the generator is turned off - so bring a torch!

Weekends

After a busy week, volunteers can take life just a little bit easier and enjoy the weekend. Saturdays are reserved for recreational dive jollies and optional advanced scuba skills development courses. Saturday night is party night with a bar extension! Sunday's are reserved for additional training activities, base camp maintenance chores and equipment servicing in preparation for the following week. Also for safety reasons, Sunday is a no diving day. A weekend getaway to the exciting seaside town of Sihanoukville will be an option for volunteers at least once a month.
