Philippines Marine *LIVE*
Life in Napantao | Life in Napantao, Philippines |
Napantao Dive Resort, PhilippinesThe Southern Leyte Reef Conservation Project is based at Napantao Dive Resort on the remote eastern side of Sogod Bay, Philippines. The bay is visited by the gigantic Whale Sharks and home to some of the best diving in the Philippines, you only have to take a couple of steps out onto the beach to be wowed by what the Philippines has to offer!
You'll be sleeping in 4-6 person dormitories, each with their own bathroom. The site has 24-hour electricity and running water can always be found at the local spring if it's not coming from the tap! The facility has a large kitchen, dining area and science room as well as several outside sitting areas overlooking the beach and house reef just 25 meters away. Most meals are prepared by our excellent cook 'Tata' who caters to both vegetarians and fried-chicken lovers! Fresh fruit and vegetables are readily available. Other than that, expect to be eating a lot of rice! No day is ever the same and to try and convey a feel for the intense and diverse experience that is expedition life is very difficult. We would encourage you to speak to past volunteers at our in-house presentations and try it for yourself! Monday to Friday
Whilst a team of local and international staff are on-hand to provide guidance and oversee expedition activities, Volunteers are expected to take an active part in managing all aspects of expedition life, including the more mundane chores such as helping keeping the expedition base clean and tidy. Daily ActivitiesEach working day is a busy but exciting one. Between survey SCUBA dives and lunch (12.00hrs) there are a series of briefings, training exercises and data management sessions, plus the usual daily chores. When this has been done, volunteers enjoy spending the late afternoon relaxing by the waters edge, reading a book , just watching the fishing boats make their way back home. Others prefer to get their heads in the water one last time and go for a swim or snorkel on the house reef or for the more active beach volley and football often draws a crowd. Dinner at 18.00hrs is followed by a de-briefing session and further training opportunities. A small bar is open from 18.00 to 22.00hrs for the sale of drinks (the sale of alcohol to Volunteers under 18 years of age is not permitted). At 22.00hrs the expedition base is secured for the night and the lights go off. Weekends
Sundays are also used to organise open days for local schools where the younger generation is taught about coral reef ecology and its significance through a series of games, snorkeling and a puppet show. There will also be opportunities for volunteers to join project scientists on trips to neighbouring villages to conduct community outreach and educational activities. Long Weekends
