September 2006
Project launch! Dr Craig Turner (JFA) and James Sawyer (CCC) undertook a two week field visit to the project in September. The two undertook the first stakeholder meeting to draw up a memorandum of agreement between all the project partners and the people of the Waria Valley. Both travelled to the Waria Valley to meet with groups and undertake specific consultations with teaching groups and to assess project areas. On return the project was launched at the Forestry Research Institute in Lae by the minister Hon. Sasa Zibe and received an excellent turnout and media coverage. After traditional dancing (sing sing) and speeches the memorandum was signed and interviews with newspapers and radio held. To show their support for the project many of the people from villages from the Waria Valley travelled the eight hours by boat to Lae to show their support and then returned the same day!
