Duties & Responsibilities

The SI will be based in the Philippines and is responsible for overseeing the safety of SCUBA diving activities on site, and delivering SCUBA diving lessons to all CCC personnel as required. In addition the SI undertakes maintenance and stock control of SCUBA equipment, manages administration including training records, maintenance schedules and fortnightly reports, and takes an active role in marine surveys.

The CCC Philippines site is subject to a 4 week repeat cycle:
Week one - Dive training
Week two and three - Skills Development Programme (training in species ID and survey protocol)
Week four - Marine surveys and community outreach

CCC require all marine surveyors to be at least AOW (or equivalent) trained therefore over the first week the SI is responsible for planning and delivering SCUBA dive training up to AOW to any international volunteers, Filipino scholars and very occasionally staff, who require it. Outside of this week CCC personnel can choose to undertake further dive training up to and including PADI Divemaster. These courses are scheduled around surveying activities and minimum stay durations apply in order to ensure ample opportunity for training. During the Skills Development Programme and surveying, dive plans are scheduled by the Science team on site and then signed off by the SI and Field Base Manager.

It is important to note that although the SI's primary role is dive training they will also receive training and certification in basic tropical reef ecology, identification skills, surveying techniques and natural resource management, and will take part in marine surveys.
The SI is appointed for a period of between 4 to 6 months to one project site, longer terms are possible if mutually welcomed. They will be line managed by the Field Base Manager and will join with a team on site consisting of a Project Scientist, Science Officer and local staff. The SI will receive a handover document written by the prior SI before arrival to help with acclimatisation and will undergo a 2 week physical handover on site.

You will undertake an essential role within an established, driven and exciting organisation with clear aims, goals and objectives. By producing highly skilled, confident divers and leading with the highest of safety standards you will play a vital role in  ensuring the smooth running of the project. The data collected by CCC survey teams are utilised to develop conservation-driven directives in partnership with municipal and local government units for the prosperity of the Philippines’ natural resources. Some of these include but are not limited to: the establishment of Marine Protected Areas (MPA) and their respective ordinance; scalable and replicable novel marine survey techniques; and capacity building and educational workshops.
